On a balmy afternoon along the former Clinchfield Railroad near Elkhorn City, KY., finds this heavy southbound CSX coal drag crawling up a stiff 1.5-percent ascent from Elkhorn City to Towers, before slighting in severity the remaining 20 or so miles to Dante, VA.  The two General Electric AC4400CW’s are in notch-8, while shoving the heavy-laden train out of Pool Point Tunnel and into the beautiful Breaks Interstate Park lying along the Kentucky and Virginia border with its magnificent scenery and gorges, as evident in this photo.  A keen eye can also note early signs of autumn throughout the country, with a subtle change of color in the trees.
